PROGRESSIVE   BACK IN STOCK!!! “It was forty years ago today...” that progressive music exploded like a bomb, following the psychedelic movement, towards a mature musical movement. Forse non tutti sanno che questa corrente musicale, sebbene abbia raggiunto il suo apice creativo negli anni ’70, affonda le proprie radici nel decennio precedente, a margine del pop psichedelico e dirama le proprie ramificazioni fino ai giorni nostri con inevitabili alti e bassi. Definire il genere progressive in poche parole non è facile, e non ci proveremo. Preferiamo illustrarne l’evoluzione che ne ha fatto un caposaldo musicale attraverso una carrellata completa ed esaustiva di tutti gli artisti che anche solo con un album hanno contribuito a costruire il muro di suono. Ecco perchè un manipolo di giornalisti e critici musicali o musicofili ha affrontato l’arduo compito di recensire tutto il recensibile, di catalogare il catalogabile per fornire anche al lettore più esigente una guida all’ascolto di 40 anni di progressive. PROGRESSIVE   NEW First time ever reissue on LP for this Italian prog classic! Duello Madre, from Genua, only released a jazz-oriented album with just a single vocal track (probably the most convincing one on the LP), in 1973 on the Produttori Associati label (Maxophone). After the band split, the bass player Callero went to Il Volo, and drummer Lo Previte played in Nova. Duello Madre was a sort of superband, as it featured Marco Zoccheddu from Nuova Idea and Osage Tribe, Bob Callero - also from Osage Tribe - and drummer Dede Lo Previte from Circus 2000, along with sax and flute player Pippo Trentin. The great musicianship of the four-piece is evident throughout the album. Aquile blu, with uncredited vocals (probably by guitarist Zoccheddu) and nice sax solos is the best track, and Momento has a nice hypnotic bass pattern. I Duello Madre, da Genova, produssero un album jazzato con un unico brano vocale (forse il più convincente dell'LP), pubblicato nel 1973 per la Produttori Associati (Maxophone). Una sorta di supergruppo, della formazione facevano parte Marco Zoccheddu ex-Nuova Idea e Osage Tribe, Bob Callero anch'egli dagli Osage Tribe e il batterista Dede Lo Previte dei Circus 2000, insieme al sassofonista e flautista Pippo Trentin, e la grande qualità dei musicisti è evidente in tutto l'album. Dopo lo scioglimento Bob Callero si unì al Volo, e il batterista Lo Previte ha suonato con i Nova. Aquile blu, l'unico pezzo cantato (in copertina non se ne parla, probabilmente la voce è del chitarrista Zoccheddu) ha degli ottimi assoli di sax è il brano di spicco, e Momento ha un bel giro di basso molto ipnotico [fonte: www.italianprog.com]. PROGRESSIVE   BACK IN STOCK! When we first heard il Ruscello, we thought we had discovered an unreleased Italian seventies prog record. Only afterwards we realized it was a band at its debut! “Paesaggio Solare” will cause tears of joy to all lovers of Italian hard prog, where the immediate comparable band that comes to our mind surely is YS-period Balletto di Bronzo... but not only! “Il Ruscello” means naive and surreal Italian lyrics with a stunning and weird Gianni Leone-style vocalist, long and elaborate tracks, simply exalting interplays between guitar and keyboards, and a solid rhythmic base. But do not expect to listen to the usual copycat band, as all tracks stay immediately in the listeners’ memory, something that happens only with the real big ones! A special example is the magnificent “Il cielo in un ruscello”, for us one of the best record starters of the last years. Recorded in London with vintage techniques, this is surely THE miracle of 2009. Masterpiece! As usual, the album is available as a beautiful vinyl replica CD. Quando abbiamo sentito il primo demo del Ruscello per un attimo abbiamo davvero creduto di avere scovato un disco Italiano inedito dei primissimi anni settanta e solo successivamente abbiamo realizzato che si trattava di un gruppo all’esordio discografico. “Paesaggio Solare” farà urlare al miracolo gli amanti delle sonorità hard prog Italiano dei primissimi settanta, dove il paragone più immediato (ma non unico) è certamente quello del Balletto di Bronzo di YS. “Il Ruscello” significa: testi rigorosamente Italiani tra il naif e il surreale sostenuti da un vocalist stranito ed inquietante, tracce lunghe e complesse, ricami tra chitarre e tastiere semplicemente esaltanti, il tutto sostenuto da una solida base ritmica. Ma non siamo di fronte al solito tributo fotocopia fine a se stesso, visto che i brani restano vivamente impressi nella memoria fin da subito, a partire da uno dei migliori e più devastanti incipit di prog Italiano degli ultimi anni, la magnifica “Il cielo in un ruscello”. Registrato a Londra con tecniche squisitamente vintage questo disco è l’autentico miracolo del 2009. Capolavoro! Come di consueto il disco è disponibile nel formato vinyl replica.

Dusk Day is the annual Italian Genesis fan meeting, organized by the self-named fanzine together with theGenesis club Rex House Umbria and the association Venti Ascensionali. For their fourth meeting in 2008 they organized a truly memorable tribute gig inviting some great Italian names: the historical progsters of Estate di San Martino, keyborder Marco Lo Muscio (here he plays tracks by Steve Hackett and Rick Wakeman with a the pipe organ inside the stunning dome of Orvieto!!) the intellectual After Genesis, the rocker Graziano Romani, former PFM vocalist Bernardo Lanzetti (nowadays in Mangalavallis), and one of the best Italian Genesis tribute bands, The Lamb from Rome). All playing their very own homage to Genesis, reinterpreting their most famous tunes and also some own material. But the most important guests of this evening surely where John and Steve Hackett, that have entertained an enthusiastic crowd with a dozen of their classics, played in acostic version. This DVD shows nearly two hours of the live gigs of that magic evening, including the complete gig of John and Steve: Not to be missed by fans of Genesis! PROGRESSIVE   NEW After the release of the legendary YS, the band Balletto di Bronzo disbanded and their leader Gianni Leone had a short solo career under the name of Leo Nero. The result was a very good album, Vero, released by the legendary Harvest label in 1977 and recorded a year before in New York. The album is totally played and sung by Leo himself, and despite some commercial pop songs, it has some good moments reminding of his old band's sound, like in La discesa nel cervello, Il castello and the intense closing track Una gabbia per me. Obviously the sound is mainly keyboard based, but Leone played drums, minimoog bass lines and even guitar on some tracks. An album track, Sono stanco anch'io appeared on the B-side of a single from 1978, Fremo. A very rare and collectible album, Vero only had a limited vinyl reissue in Japan, and now, for the very first time, is released on a great sounding 180g high quality vinyl! Dopo lo scioglimento del Balletto di Bronzo, il cantante e tastierista Gianni Leone tentò una carriera da solista con il nuovo nome di Leo Nero, ed il risultato fu un bel disco, Vero, pubblicato dalla Harvest nel 1977 e registrato un anno prima a New York. L'album è interamente suonato e cantato dallo stesso Leo, e nonostante alcune canzoni di stampo più commerciale, contiene degli ottimi brani nello stile del suo gruppo precedente, come La discesa nel cervello, Il castello e l'intenso brano di chiusura Una gabbia per me. Ovviamente il suono è basato principalmente sulle tastiere, ma Leone suona anche batteria, parti di basso con il minimoog ed anche la chitarra in alcuni brani. Molto raro e ricercato, Vero è stato ristampato in vinile solo in Giappone e per la prima volta è disponibile su vinile da 180g in qualità audiofila.

PROGRESSIVE   NEW First time ever reissue on LP for this Italian prog classic! A band from Rome formed in 1971 and featuring two ex-members of Under 2000, a group that had released some singles in 1970. Their only album, released in 1972 by CGD, is a typical Italian symphonic prog album with strong classical influences and keyboards as leading instrument, some orchestral arrangements in around the same style as the later Contaminazione by Rovescio della Medaglia, and short vocal parts. The LP contains two long suites divided into small movements with very long and complex titles. The album is very good and sadly overlooked by many, it's surely worth a listen. After the entrance for a short while of a second keyboardist, Franco Di Sabbatino (later with Rovescio della Medaglia), the band split around 1974, when a second album had been recorded in demo form but never released. Il loro unico album, uscito nel 1972 per la CGD è un tipico album di prog sinfonico italiano con forti influenze classiche e tastiere in netta evidenza, alcuni arrangiamenti orchestrali nello stile successivamente ripreso dal Rovescio della Medaglia per Contaminazione, e parti vocali brevi. L'LP contiene due lunghe suite divise in piccoli movimenti dai titoli lunghi e complessi. PROGRESSIVE   BACK IN STOCK!!! RanestRane is an Italian prog band from Rome that was formed in 1998. The aim of the musicians involved in this project was to compose and perform a rock-opera, so they chose a famous Werner Herzog's film, "Nosferatu The Vampyre", and commented it with music and original lyrics. They started their live activity in 2000 and conceived their shows as a "cineconcerto", with the images of the Herzog's film flowing in the background. In 2006 they released their rock-opera on a self-produced studio album, a double CD called "Nosferatu il Vampiro". Among their musical influences you can find bands like PFM, BMS, Genesis, Marillion. Excellent double cd at a special price reccomended to all lovers of melodic progressive concept albums! Le RanestRane sono un gruppo prog italiano di Roma, costituito nel 1998 con l'ambizione di comporre un'opera rock. Diversamente da altre opere rock, dove il film segue l'opera composta dai musicisti, in questo caso le RanestRane hanno scelto un capolavoro gotico di W. Herzog, "Nosferatu Il Vampiro", componendo una nuova colonna sonora con musica e testi narranti la storia. Dal 2000 le RanestRane si esibiscono nel "cineconcerto", con proiezione del film e esecuzione dell'opera rock dal vivo. Tra le loro influenze musicali, troviamo PFM, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Genesis, Marillion. "Nosferatu Il Vampiro" � un doppio cd eccellente e consigliato a tutti gli amanti dei concept album progressive melodici!

PROGRESSIVE   BACK IN STOCK! After the 2005 well received and critically acclaimed CD Nostos Ubi Maior release their second awaited opus called Senza tempo. It is not a proper concept album but its major influence (yet not the only one) lies on Neil Gaiman's graphic-novel masterpiece, Sandman, and on its main characters, the Endless: 7 brothers and sisters named Destiny, Death, Dream, Desire, Despair, Destruction and Delirium. These 7 concepts are also the starting point for the 10 songs (one is a four-parts song) included in the album. In comparison with their first work Nostos the new songs represent a remarkable step forward to a more structured writing, yet with more experimental moments. The giants of the seventies italian prog rock are not the one and only reference anymore; yet the 2009 Ubi Maior sound remains powerful, with its strong, dark and symphonic atmospheres. The themes of the lyrics give their music a haunting edge, and it's still possible to hear echoes of Il Balletto di Bronzo and PFM but with also reference to some british progressive rock as King Crimson and Pink Floyd. The sound of the band is still vintage, heavily based on Hammond organ, mellotron and pianoforte with a hard-edge guitar lines. The italian lyrics are from time to time hopeless, introspective, dark, sacred and onyric and their aim is to develop and communicate - possibly in an original way - emotions and ideas that lie under Neil Gaiman's concept of the Endless. Released in Digipack edition with an inner sheet for the english translation of the lyrics. Dopo l'ottimo debutto di “Nostos” del 2005 gli Ubi Maior pubblicano la loro seconda attesa opera intitolata "Senza Tempo". Non è proprio un concept album ma la sua maggiore influenza (anche se non l'unica) risiede sulla splendida graphic-novel Sandman di Neil Gaiman e sui sette Eterni: Destino, Morte, Sogno, Desiderio, Disperazione, Distruzione e Delirio. Questi sette concetti sono il punto di partenza per i 10 brani (uno è diviso in quattro parti) inclusi nell'album. La tematica misteriosa dei testi, cantati in italiano, conferiscono alla musica una prospettiva soprannaturale. I giganti degli anni settanta non sono più l'unico riferimento per la musica degli Ubi Maior: nei brani è ancora possibile sentire echi de Il Balletto di Bronzo e della PFM ma con anche riferimenti al progressive rock dei King Crimson e dei Pink Floyd. Il sound degli Ubi Maior rimane potente, scuro, forte e con sinfoniche atmosfere vintage. L'Hammond, il mellotron e il pianoforte si fondono in modo perfettamente con riff di chitarra molto duri e taglienti. Pubblicato in digipack, oltre al libretto in italiano all’interno della confezione si trova la traduzione in inglese dei testi. Forse il miglior CD di rock progressive italiano del 2009.

PROGRESSIVE   NEW Based in Rome, L'Uovo di Colombo was a sort of primordial supergroup featuring Enzo Volpini and Ruggero Stefani that had previously played together in I Fholks with future members of Reale Accademia di Musica, while Elio Volpini had been a member of Flea (on the Honey). L'Uovo di Colombo is a great album, with the very good voice of Toni Gionta (his real surname was Tartarini and he was later the singer with Cherry Five) backed by a keyboard/bass/drums trio in perfect Le Orme style with occasional use of acoustic and electric guitar. The solid rhythm section and competent keyboard playing give the album a very high quality and the eight tracks are all perfectly enjoyable. After the band's demise, drummer Ruggero Stefani joined Samadhi, then Mediterraneo and Gli Alunni del Sole. Elio Volpini went back to his old cohorts of Flea to form the jazz-rock outfit Etna. As said before, singer Gionta changed his name to Tony Tartarini and was briefly involved in Cherry Five. Never reissued on vinyl before, great sounding 180g high quality vinyl! I romani L'Uovo di Colombo sono stati una sorta di supergruppo ante litteram: Enzo Volpini e Ruggero Stefani avevano suonato insieme nei Fholks con i futuri componenti della Reale Accademia di Musica, mentre Elio Volpini era stato nei Flea (on the Honey). L'Uovo di Colombo è un gran bel disco, con l'ottima voce di Toni Gionta (il suo vero nome era Tartarini ed è stato poi il cantante dei Cherry Five) sostenuto da un trio di tastiere/basso/batteria in perfetto stile Le Orme con l'uso occasionale di chitarra elettrica e acustica. La sezione ritmica compatta, e la bravura del tastierista danno all'album un eccellente livello qualitativo e gli otto brani compresi nel disco sono tutti ugualmente apprezzabili. Dopo la fine del gruppo, il batterista Ruggero Stefani (precedentemente nei Fholks con i futuri componenti della Reale Accademia di Musica) entrò nei Samadhi e più tardi ha suonato con i Mediterraneo e Gli Alunni del Sole. Elio Volpini tornò con i vecchi compagni dei Flea per formare il gruppo jazz-rock Etna. Come già detto, il cantante Gionta cambiò il nome in Tony Tartarini e fece parte per breve tempo dei Cherry Five. Una delle massime rarità del prog italiano uscito ai tempi per l'etichetta EMI/Columbia, questa ristampa è su vinile da 180g in qualità audiofila!
